The architecture of Hindu temples is unique and diverse. It can be divided mainly into three major styles: Nagar style, Dravidian style, and Vesara style. 

Nagara Style (नागर शैली) 

  • This style is prevalent in Northern India. 
  • The distinctive feature of Nagar style temples is their tall spire (tower), known as “Shikhara” or “Spire.” 
  • The spire is divided into small components called “Amalaka” and “Kalasha.” 
  • Examples: Kandariya Mahadev Temple in Khajuraho and Lingaraj Temple in Odisha. 

Dravidian Style (द्रविड़ शैली) 

  • This style is prevalent in Southern India. 
  • The hallmark of Dravidian style temples is their massive entrance tower, known as “Gopuram.” 
  • The temple structure includes a sanctum sanctorum, pavilion, and various subsidiary shrines. 
  • Examples: Meenakshi Temple in Tamil Nadu and Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur. 

Vesara Style (बेसर शैली) 

  • This style is prevalent in Central India. 
  • The Vesara style is a blend of Nagar and Dravidian styles. 
  • It exhibits elements from both styles. 
  • Example: Kanaka Durga Temple in Andhra Pradesh Kailashnath temple, Ellora, Chennakesava temple, Virupaksha temple, and Ladkhan temple.
